She isn’t sleeping because it hurts too much to see the ‘good things’ she either lost (Henry) or things she either thinks she can’t have or isn’t worthy of having (happiness with Daryl). Carol’s mind is going through so much turmoil and she is overburdened by grief, guilt, self-denial and a belief that she doesn’t deserve happiness. The things we dream about are very closely connected to our emotions and our reality, both conscious and suppressed. The brain operates at a much more emotional level while you sleep then while you are awake, and therefore it can make connections to your feelings that your conscious self wouldn’t necessarily make. She needs to deal with all the things she’s been running away from, allow herself to heal somewhat and find a renewed sense of self worth before she even begins to try making this ‘dream’ into a reality. In Season 2 Carol was the first person to encourage the blossoming of Daryl’s personal worth by telling him ‘You are just as good as them’ and calling him a ‘man of honour’. In Season 10 it’s Daryl’s turn to do the same kind of thing for her. And he will. I truly believe he will. October 18, 2019 at 11:03PM

A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes

There is an extended scene/material available through AMC (I am not sure if it’s available to everyone or just through the subscription)

When Michonne asks Carol if she can’t sleep because of bad dreams, Carol says;

‘No, good ones, but they hurt and they shouldn’t.’

This confirms that Carol isn’t avoiding sleeping because she’s afraid of nightmares.

Or isn’t ready to make. Yet.

Carol wants to be happy with Daryl but she is either afraid to embrace it or simply doesn’t believe that after all the things she’s done and lost she deserves to have it.
